My ceramics
consist of individual pieces of clay that are each formed
into a shape by tearing and folding, gently allowing the
clay to take form. The pieces are pressed together and
folded around one another, creating a sense of unity and
a new dimension.
I create
each piece of art specifically to fit into the environment
into which it will be installed, whether private or
corporate. My ceramic art, designed to fit into a space,
is called architectural ceramics. Careful planning,
measuring of the wall and a series of designs on paper
are all important initial steps in the creative process.
To mount
my ceramics I use Perspex, which is made into a light
box. This is then installed onto the wall with bolts
or screws, ensuring ease of removal if required. The
clay I use is porcelain, a high fired stoneware clay,
which is very light in weight, highly durable, waterproof,
and will last a lifetime. The individual porcelain pieces
are very thin for the purpose of diffusion of light.
I use
a high quality glue for the mounting of ceramics and
this glue is heat safe and permanent. For the lights
I use low watt, low heat light bulbs. The mural can
be treated as an ordinary light - switched on and off
at the wall. The light box is designed for ease of bulb
replacement.
